As the city of New Rochelle prepared its 250th anniversary, members of its country coin club requested that Congress pass legislation for a new coin honoring the occasion. The result is this beautiful half-dollar specimen, which features an iconic design by artist Gertrude Lathrop. Today, Provident Metals is pleased to offer certified 1938 New Rochelle Half Dollar Silver Coins to you for purchase online.

Obverse
On the obverse of New Rochelle Half Dollar Silver Coins, there is a depiction of landowner John Pell guiding a fatted calf. Pell and the calf are shown facing the right, with Pell dressed in a traditional 17th-centuryoutfit. Pell is featured here because he sold the land that would eventually become New Rochelle. Youll find inscriptions also on the obverse reading SETTLED 1688, INCORPORATED 1899, NEW ROCHELLE, NEW YORK.
Reverse
The reverse field of 1938 New Rochelle Half Dollar Silver Coins features a fleur de lis. Like the obverse design, this image was created by artist Gertrude Lathrop. It is commonly found on French heraldry as well as the official seal of New Rochelle. Inscriptions on the reverse read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1938 HALF DOLLAR.
History
New Rochelle is located in Westchester County in southeastern New York. It is the 7th largest city in the state and is roughly 18 miles from Manhattan. Called New Rock and New Rock City by some residents, New Rochelle was originally settled by French Protestants known as the Huguenots. They were fleeing persecution in their homeland and named their city after that from whence they came, La Rochelle.
