Obverse

President Lincoln appears on the obverse of the 1943-S Steel Cent Wheat Penny. In this iconic bust, we see the 16th President of the United States in right-profile relief looking both calm and dignified. Inscriptions read 1943, IN GOD WE TRUST. You can also find the San Francisco mintmark on the obverse below the date.

Reverse

A pair of wheat stalks appear on the reverse of 1943-S Lincoln Steel Cent Pennies. These wheat ears appear in symmetrical curved shapes on either side of the coins field. Set between them are inscriptions that read ONE CENT, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. There is also an inscription along the upper rim of the unofficial motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, a Latin phrase meaning Out of Many, One.

History

While the Steel Wheat Penny was certainly an affordable alternative to copper during WWII, the coin was not without its problems. One was simply its steel appearance, which led many to mistake it for a dime. 1943 was the only year these unique Wheat Pennies were produced. The following three years utilized retrieved brass shell casings blended with pure copper. By 1947, the standard 95% copper penny was back in production.
