The Walking Liberty half dollar is a triumph of beautiful medallic artwork that has captured the interest of collectors and investors for decades. It was created by the sculptor Adolph Weinman at the behest of the Commission of Fine Arts and of Mint Engraver Robert W. Woolley, first issued in the year 1916 and portraying Lady Liberty walking toward a rising sun. Intricate and gorgeous, the coin attained notable longevity despite the technological difficulties its level of detail imposed on contemporary minting technology, and it was issued for a span of just over three decades. Featuring a high-quality strike and luster, the 1944-D Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar is now available from Provident Metals.

Coin Highlights:

  • Comes in a protective plastic slab, labeled with the coin’s earned NGC MS65 grade!
  • Struck at the Denver Mint in 1944!
  • Contains 90% silver and 10% copper.
  • Face value of a half dollar backed by the United States of America.
  • Obverse side features Adolph Weinman’s famous Walking Liberty design.
  • Reverse side features a bald eagle rising from a mountaintop perch.

This 1944-D Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollar comes in a protective plastic slab that carries a label with its certified grade of MS65, meaning that it retains its full original luster with only light and scattered contact marks that do not distract from the overall design. Appealing to the eye and bearing the “D” mint-mark to verify its provenance at the Denver Mint, each piece ships fully insured by Provident Metals.

Obverse

The coin’s obverse side is dominated by the iconic image of Lady Liberty striding toward the rising sun, a US flag fluttering over her shoulder and an olive branch cradled in the crook of her left arm. This is accompanied by inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1944.”

Reverse

A bald eagle rises from its mountaintop perch on the coin’s reverse side, accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “HALF DOLLAR.”

History

When Robert W. Woolley came to the office of Mint Engraver in 1915, he discovered a legal restriction that compelled him to replace coinage that had been in production for a period of 25 years. This prompted him to contact the Commission of Fine Arts to seek out designers for a range of new dimes, quarters, and half dollars, and one of the artists thus commissioned was the well-known sculptor and medallist Adolph Weinman, who had studied under famous names like Augustus St. Gaudens. One of the designs Weinman created was the intricate and beautiful Walking Liberty, which was notoriously difficult to strike with the minting technology of the day but was so visually arresting as to make the effort worthwhile for more than three decades, starting in 1916 until its final issue in 1947.
