A historic triumph of coin design, Adolph Weinman’s Walking Liberty half dollar has fascinated investors and discerning collectors for multiple decades. Created at the request of Mint Engraver Robert W. Woolley and the Commission of Fine Arts and first ussed in 1916, its portrayal of Lady Liberty striding toward a rising sun was so intricate and beautiful that its details actually challenged the minting technology of the time. Despite the technical difficulty in striking it, the imagery proved irresistible, and it remained in production for thirty-one years. Discover it in a high-quality strike and luster with the 1945-S Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar, now available from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Available in a protective plastic slab, labeled with its earned NGC MS65 grade!
  • Struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1945!
  • Contains 90% silver and 10% copper.
  • Face value of a half dollar backed by the United States of America.
  • Obverse side features Adolph Weinman’s Walking Liberty design.
  • Reverse side features a bald eagle rising from a mountaintop perch.

This 1945-S Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollar comes in a protective plastic slab labeled with its certified grade of MS65: it has its full original luster with only light and scattered contact marks that won’t distract from the overall design. Appealing to the eye and bearing the S mint mark to verify its production at the San Francisco Mint, this piece ships fully insured against even the most remote chance of loss or damage by Provident Metals.

Obverse

The coin’s obverse side is dominated by Weinman’s iconic image of Lady Liberty striding toward the rising sun, a US flag fluttering over her shoulder, and an olive branch in the crook of her left arm. She is accompanied by inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1945.”

Reverse

A bald eagle rises from its mountaintop perch on the coin’s reverse side. It’s accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “HALF DOLLAR.”

History

The sculptor and medallist Adolph Weinman had studied and apprenticed under famous names in his field, including the unparalleled Augustus St. Gaudens, and had launched a studio of his own when he was contacted by the Commission of Fine Arts in 1915. Acting at the behest of new Mint Engraver Robert W. Woolley — who believed he had to replace the famous Barber Coinage that had been in production for the past quarter century — they invited him to submit to a process for choosing new designs for the quarter, dime, and half dollar. Two of his designs were accepted, with the Walking Liberty design for the half dollar arguably proving the more famous. Difficult to strike, but compelling, it would stay in production until 1947.
