History

On September 16, 1810, Hidalgo delivered his historic Grito de Dolores (Cry of Dolores), a rallying speech that sparked the Mexican independence movement. Leading a force made up of indigenous peoples, mestizos, and criollos, he achieved early victories but was defeated at the Battle of Caldern Bridge in January 1811. He was captured while retreating and executed on July 30, 1811. His sacrifice inspired others to continue the fight, leading to independence a decade later.
