The 1955-1957 Mexican five pesos contains 72% silver and have an actual silver weight of .4179 troy ounces.
The obverse features a portrait of Miguel Hidalgo, “Father of Mexico,” with the inscription “Independencia Y Libertad” (Independence and Liberty). The reverse bears the Mexican seal with the famous eagle attacking a serpent, and the inscriptions “Cinco Pesos,” “18.055 G,” the year, and “Ley .720” to indicate the legal silver content.
While Hidalgo did not actually establish the country of Mexico, he is credited as the Revolutionary father because it was his encouragement that motivated the poor Mexican citizens to rise up against the Spanish king and declare their independence.
