Silver dollar coins are not commonly issued by sovereign mints anymore as the value of silver far exceeds the face value assigned to the coin. However, this has not always been the case as silver dollar coins were produced in the United States and Canada, for example, as recently as the mid-20th century. Right now, you can buy Canadian Silver Dollars from Provident Metals.

Obverse

On the obverse of the Canadian Silver Dollar is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The portrait of Her Majesty available in this release comes with either the first-generation or second-generation effigy of the Queen. In the first-generation design, she wears a simple wreath crown. The second-generation coin depicts her with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.

Reverse

The reverse side of the Canadian Silver Dollar Coins features one of two designs. Most of the coins have the Voyageur Design used on the silver dollar throughout its 1935-1986 run. The Voyageur Design depicts the roots of indigenous-European contact in Canada with explorers seeking fur routes. In the design, a fur trader navigates a river with an indigenous guide in a canoe. Inscriptions include Canada at the top with the date mark and Dollar at the bottom.

A special 1964 Canadian Silver Dollar issue featured a design commemorating the Quebec Conference of 1864 that formed the roots of Canadian federalism and the eventual federation movement. This coins reverse has a central design with the symbols of the French fleur-de-lis, Irish shamrock, Scottish thistle, and English rose referencing the influences of the United Kingdom and France in Canadian history.

History

Canadian Silver Dollars were introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1935. The silver dollar was meant to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of English King George V, but he would die just one year later in the early production run of Canadian Silver Dollars. In all, the Royal Canadian Mint would issue silver dollars from 1935 to 1986.
