For more than a century now, President Abraham Lincoln has appeared on the paper currency of the United States. One of the most popular designs is that which is now found on the $5 Federal Reserve Note. This design also featured on the previous $5 United States Note, also known as the $5 Legal Tender Note. Provident Metals currently has 1963 $5 Legal Tender Notes available to you for purchase online.

When you purchase a 1963 $5 Legal Tender Note in this Provident Metals listing, you will receive a note that is housed in a protective currency sleeve to protect its GEM Uncirculated condition. Paper notes in this condition have an above-average centering for the primary obverse and reverse designs, as well as just one or two minor detractions indicating handling.

Obverse

President Abraham Lincoln is on the obverse side of 1963 $5 Legal Tender Notes. This type of portrait is known as keyhole or porthole design and is named for the similar appearance of the frame to a ships porthole. This same design is still in use on the $5 Federal Reserve Note and depicts the 16th President of the United States of America.

Reverse

The Lincoln Memorial is depicted in the reverse design of 1963 $5 Legal Tender Notes. This image debuted in 1928 when the Treasury redesigned the $5 Legal Tender Note to feature President Lincoln on the obverse, which was the same time this smaller format was introduced for the bills.

History

The United States Note debuted in 1862 and was in circulation in the United States until 1971. The series was issued concurrently with everything from Silver Certificates and Gold Certificates to the National Bank Note, Federal Reserve Bank Note, and the Federal Reserve Note. In fact, the modern Federal Reserve Note may be the only form of paper currency still in use in the United States, but the United States Note will remain the longest-running note until 2024, at which point the Federal Reserve Note will finally surpass its predecessors longevity.
