For a quarter of a century prior to the year 1938, the American five-cent coin was called the Buffalo Nickel. It was designed by James Earle Frasier to feature American themes that couldn’t be mistaken as coming from any other country: the eponymous buffalo and the head of a Native American. Though it was well-regarded, it was not the easiest coin to strike for minting technology of the day, and eventually, the U.S. Mint sought out a replacement design that became known as the Jefferson Nickel. Featuring artistic themes that were just as specifically American — the Republic’s third President and his famous home at Monticello — it went on to reign as the modern American nickel, with slight adjustments in design, right down to the present day. Specimens of this coin with an uncirculated grade are popular collectors’ item, such as the 1964 Gem Proof Jefferson Nickel, now available from the team at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Comes in a protective plastic slab labeled with the coin’s grade!
  • Issued in 1964!
  • Contents are 75% copper and 25% nickel.
  • Face value of five cents issued by the United States of America.
  • The obverse side features President Thomas Jefferson in effigy.
  • The coin’s reverse side features his famous home at Monticello.

This “Gem Uncirculated” quality indicates above-average luster, strong visual appeal and only light and scattered contact marks. Its proof finish provides for brilliant mirror-like backgrounds, and it ships in a secure plastic slab labeled with the coin’s grade. Provident Metals fully insures each shipment against any possibility of loss or damage.

Obverse

The obverse side of the coin features an effigy of President Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “LIBERTY – 1964.”

Reverse

The coin’s reverse side features the famous mansion of Monticello, which was Jefferson’s home for many years. It’s joined with the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “MONTICELLO” and “FIVE CENTS.”

History

The year 1964 is a key date for Jefferson Nickel collectors: this is a year of issue with a particularly large survival estimate of uncirculated modern nickels, with a worldwide supply of around 1.3 million pieces estimated by experts based on a wide range of criteria. Designed by the German-born sculptor Felix Schlag, its iconic artwork and ease of striking have made the Jefferson Nickel an enduring part of American modern currency, and a high-quality uncirculated piece like this one makes for a valuable addition to any collection.
