For a quarter of a century prior to the year 1938, the American five-cent coin was called the Buffalo Nickel. It was designed by James Earle Frasier to feature American themes that couldn’t be mistaken as coming from any other country: the eponymous buffalo and the head of a Native American. Though it was well-regarded, it was not the easiest coin to strike for minting technology of the day, and eventually, the U.S. Mint sought out a replacement design that became known as the Jefferson Nickel. Featuring artistic themes that were just as specifically American — the Republic’s third President and his famous home at Monticello — it went on to reign as the modern American nickel, with slight adjustments in design, right down to the present day.
