The US Mint issues Proof Sets for collectors on an annual basis and has done so for decades. The 1964 Proof Set is a noteworthy release for its introduction of the new Kennedy Half Dollar, which Congress authorized just over a month after President Kennedys death. Sales of this Proof Set skyrocketed, forcing the US Mint to halt production at one point, and once continued, each buyer was limited to how many they could purchase. The coins in this Proof Set contain 90% fine silver. Currently, Provident Metals has 1964 US Mint Proof Sets available for purchase.

Highlights:

  • Received in sealed plastic pouch with US Mint manila envelope!
  • First year of the Kennedy Half Dollar!
  • Set contains five 1964 coins from the US Mint!
  • Contains .6148 Troy oz of actual silver content in all.
  • Each denomination has its own obverse and reverse.
  • Each denomination reflects its respective face value in US dollars.
  • Total of 3,950,762 proof sets were issued in 1964.
  • Proof specimens.

Each Proof Set includes one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and the new Kennedy Half Dollar. The set also includes an octagonal foil seal, imprinted with US MINT PHILADELPHIA. The coins are proof strikes, making them more visually beautiful.

Obverse

The Kennedy Half Dollar obverse features the left profile of the 35th President of the US. The design was created by Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts, who had initially created the design for the Kennedy medal in the Mints Presidential series. Roberts made a few modifications to that design, and it was approved by both Jacqueline Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy.

Reverse

The Kennedy Half Dollar reverse features a version of the Presidential Seal. The design was created by Frank Gasparro, who had also initially created the design for the Kennedy medal in the Mints Presidential series.

History

The 3,950,762 Proof Sets sold in 1964 held the record for the most sets sold until being surpassed by the Bicentennial set in 1976. This was the last year that the coins contained 90% fine silver. Beginning in 1965, Proof Sets were reduced to containing only 40% fine silver (silver clad).
