After President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s passing in April 1945, the nation honored him by featuring his bust on the US Dime. Crafted by John R. Sinnock, the 8th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, Roosevelt’s portrait made its debut in 1946, replacing the iconic Mercury Dime. Today, you can find 1970s Franklin D. Each of these 1970s Franklin D. Roosevelt Dimes boasts the Torch Reverse and is plated with 24-karat gold. The set comprises 20 coins, all minted between 1970 and 1979. While they all originate from the 1970s, we cannot guarantee whether your set will feature varying or matching date marks.

On the obverse, you’ll find a dignified portrait of President Roosevelt, known for his comforting “fireside chats” – radio broadcasts where he spoke directly to the American people during crises such as the Great Depression and World War II. Inscriptions read LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date.

The reverse design features Sinnock’s portrayal of a lit torch, flanked by olive and oak branches. The olive branch symbolizes peace, while the oak branch signifies strength and achievement. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and ONE DIME.

Roosevelt played a key role in mobilizing the United States for war production and supplying Allied forces during World War II. He referred to the United States as the “Arsenal of Democracy,” highlighting the country’s role in providing military aid and supplies to its allies, particularly Britain and the Soviet Union.
