One of the shorter-lived coins in circulation in US history was the Eisenhower Dollar. After a 36-year hiatus in US dollar coin production following the end of the Peace Dollar program in 1935, the United States Mint introduced the Eisenhower Dollar design in 1971 with a silver-clad and a standard clad coin. Right now, you can purchase Clad Eisenhower Dollars online from Provident Metals.

Obverse

On the obverse of Clad Eisenhower Dollars is a left-profile portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. This image captures Eisenhower from his time serving in office as President of the United States of America from January 1953 to January 1961. The portrait is accompanied by inscriptions of Liberty, In God We Trust, and a date mark. The design was created by Frank Gasparro, 10th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.

Reverse

The reverse side of Clad Eisenhower Dollars features an image of the American bald eagle for dates of 1971 to 1974 and 1977 to 1979. The primary design shows the bald eagle as it comes to rest on the moon, with Earth visible in the distant background. This image was inspired by the Apollo 11 mission patch. For the 1975 and 1976 coins, the Liberty Bell was placed on the reverse in front of the moon to honor the nations Bicentennial. Inscriptions include United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, and One Dollar. Gasparro also developed this design for the Clad Eisenhower Dollar.

History

The Clad Eisenhower Dollar was the intended circulation piece, though the coins were not popularly used outside of Nevada where the coins were popular in casinos. Clad Eisenhower Dollars have 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel. That is split between the 75% copper-25% nickel clad layer on the outside and a 100% copper core.
