Obverse

On the obverse of 1972 Double Die Obverse Pennies, youll find the classic Lincoln portrait from designer Victor D. Brenner. This portrait was created for the inaugural 1909 penny, which was issued in honor of Lincolns 100th birthday. It has appeared on the beloved US one-cent piece ever since. You will also see inscriptions on the obverse reading IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 1972.

Reverse

The reverse of Double Die Obverse Lincoln Pennies contains a depiction of the Lincoln Memorial. This design is based on the iconic memorial site that was officially dedicated in Washington DC in 1922. The design is credited to former US Mint Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro. Youll find an inscription on the reverse that read E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE CENT.

History

The double image present on these unique coins is a result of an error caused during the coining process. The hub must strike the die multiple times in order for the design to appear clearly. But when the hub is accidentally struck in different spots on the die, a double image occurs. If the mistake is missed, a whole series of double-die coins can be minted, creating a unique set of error coins for collectors to track down.
