The 1973 US Mint Proof Set includes a One Dollar coin for the first time since 1904. The Mint added the copper-nickel clad version of the Eisenhower Dollar to the 1973 Proof Set, making it a 6 coin set. With the additional coin, the Treasury decided to increase the price of the set. Sales did fall off a bit from 1972 levels, but still managed to sell 2,760,339 sets in 1973. The Proof finish on these coins enhances their beauty. This set was made by the US Mint in San Francisco. This 1973 US Mint Proof Set is currently available for purchase online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The obverse and the reverse of the Eisenhower Dollar were both designed by Frank Gasparro, the Chief Engraver of the US Mint.
Obverse
Gasparro studied 30 pictures of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and used a drawing he had actually done of the President in a parade, to create the design of the former President that is featured on the obverse. The design is a left-facing bust of Dwight D. Eisenhower. It includes the inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 1973.
Reverse
Since the space program was begun during Eisenhowers administration, Congress decided it was appropriate that a tribute to the Apollo 11 space flight be featured on the Eisenhower Dollar. The design on the reverse is based upon the Apollo 11 mission insignia, and features a bald eagle landing on the moons surface, carrying an olive branch. A depiction of the Earth is in the distant background. It includes the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
Each Proof Set consists of one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Eisenhower Dollar. The coins are packaged in a two-piece clear plastic case. The coins are set in a red felt-covered paper insert that makes the beauty of the coins pop out! This case is then inserted into a black plastic frame with a hinged flap that allows the case to stand up to display the coins.
