Among the final two coins issued were a 1/4 oz BU gold coin and a 1/2 oz proof gold coin. These specimens were issued with 14-karat and 22-karat gold, respectively, and had limited mintages of 650,000 and 350,000, again, respectively.

Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse side of 1976 $100 Proof Canadian 1/2 oz Gold Coins. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief in a 1965 design from Arnold Machin. The image is accompanied by inscriptions of ELIZABETH II, CANADA, and 1976. There is also a maple leaf below the portrait of the Queen between her name and the nation of issue.

Reverse

For the reverse design of the 1976 $100 Proof Canadian Gold Coin, Dora de Pedery-Hunt borrowed inspiration from an Ancient Greek image symbolizing the Ancient Olympic Games. This design shows the goddess Pallas Athena extending an arm to crown an Ancient Greek Olympian. The inscriptions on this side read 100 DOLLARS and 776 B.C. 1976 A.D. There is an additional inscription below the field with the Greek letters for 21st Olympiad.

History

The 1976 Summer Olympics were the first Olympic Games ever held in Canada, and to date, the only Summer Olympics the nation ever hosted. Just as it would later do with the 1988 Winter Olympics, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a range of commemorative coins to celebrate the games and help fund the costs of hosting the competition. The games ran from July 17th to August 1st with 198 events in 21 sports and a total of 92 participating nations.

Ordering
