Coin collectors dream of being able to add brilliant uncirculated condition coins to their collections. By purchasing US Mint Sets they are able to do that. The US Mint Sets are uncirculated examples of each of the coins used in circulation in that particular year. The uncirculated coins are struck at 2 different Mints and packaged in their own sealed cellophane packaging. Come collect yours! Provident Metals is presently offering the 1978 US Mint Set for purchase online.

  • Set arrives in sealed cellophane packaging!
  • Set consists of twelve 1978 coins from the US Mint!
  • The face value in US dollars – is displayed on each coin.
  • The obverse and reverse designs are unique to each denomination.
  • Total of 2,162,609 mint sets were issued in 1978.
  • Please note the outer envelope/sleeve/box may be missing from some sets.
  • Also note the packaging may not be in perfect condition in some sets.

Twelve uncirculated coins, separated into 2 packages, make up the Mint Sets. One package, with red borders, contains the 6 coins struck at the Denver Mint. The second package, with blue borders, contains the 6 coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. One each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Eisenhower Dollar are included in each set. This is the last year that the Eisenhower Dollar is included.

Obverse

The Eisenhower Dollar obverse depicts a left-facing profile of Dwight D. Eisenhower. A basis for this design was a sketch that Frank Gasparro had the opportunity to draw while watching a New York parade in 1945, celebrating the Allied victory in Europe. General Eisenhower was in the parade. Years later, Gasparro studied roughly 30 pictures of the former General and President, and his sketch, to create the design that appears on the obverse.

Reverse

The Eisenhower Dollar reverse depicts an eagle flying low over the moons surface, carrying an olive branch in its claws. In the distant background is the Earth. This design is a tribute to the Apollo 11 mission, which seems appropriate as the space program started during Eisenhowers administration.

Frank Gasparro, the tenth Chief Engraver of the US Mint, designed both the obverse and reverse of the Eisenhower Dollar. These designs allow the dollar to commemorate both Eisenhower and the Moon mission.

History

Introduced in 1947, US Mint Sets initially included 2 samples of each coin struck for circulation from the Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco Mints. This led them to be referred to as double mint sets. Sales of Mint Sets in 1947 reached 5,000 sets. As coin collecting increased in popularity, sales reached 50,314 sets by 1958. In 1959, the Mint Sets were changed to include only 1 sample of each coin struck for circulation, and were struck only in the Denver and Philadelphia Mints. This led sales to jump to 187,000 sets in 1959, and by 1964 only 5 years later – sales of Mint Sets surpassed the 1 million mark. Sales of Mint Sets reached 2,750,000 sets in 1972 an all-time high up to that point – only to suffer an almost 1 million sets drop in sales in 1973. Sales started slowly climbing again to a level of 2,162,609 sets for 1978.
