The Royal Canadian Mint was originally founded in 1908, in Ottawa. Until the 1980s, the RCM operated in this one lone facility. At that time, a second facility was opened in Winnipeg to boost production capacity. It is the official sovereign mint of Canada and it produces all of Canadas circulation coins as well as manufactures the circulation coins of other nations.

Obverse

The obverse of the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin in this first year of issue features the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II. This version of Her Majesty portrays a 39-year-old Queen wearing her crown. On 2 later dates, the portrayal of Her Majesty is updated to more accurately reflect her age at the time. In 1952, Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne of the United Kingdom, and since that time, these numerous versions of Her Majesty have been highlighted on the obverse of all Canadian coinage, including one without a crown. Inscriptions on the obverse are ELIZABETH II and 50 DOLLARS 1979.

Reverse

The reverse of the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin in this first year of issue features the Maple Leaf design created by master engraver Walter Ott. In 1979, Ott created this design to be used on all versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf coins, and it has remained basically unchanged. The Maple Leaf is a symbol of pride and nationalism for Canadians, as well as its unofficial emblem. Inscriptions on the reverse are CANADA, 999, FINE GOLD, and 1 OZ OR PUR.

History

First issued in 1979, the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin has been issued annually ever since. As a result of their consistency of design and mintage, the Maple Leaf Gold coins have been regarded as the standard by which other 24-karat gold bullion coins are judged. Initially issued in only the 1 oz denomination, these coins had a face value of $50 Canadian Dollars. In 1982, the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz fractional denominations were added. In 1986, the 1/2 oz denomination was added, and in 1993, the 1/20 denomination was added. A 1/15 oz denomination was tested in 1994 but due to very low interest, it was discontinued. A 1 gram denomination was added in 2014.
