The Krugerrand was first introduced by South Africa in 1967 as the worlds original modern bullion coin, created with the intent of making private gold ownership more accessible. At a time when many nations limited gold ownership, the Krugerrand stood out by listing its gold weight instead of a currency value. Provident Metals now offers the 1980 South African Krugerrand 1/4 oz Gold Coin online.

Highlights:

  • Coin arrives in an individual protective flip!
  • 1st year for the 1/4 oz Gold Krugerrands!
  • Contains 1/4 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Paul Kruger on the obverse.
  • A Springbok antelope is displayed on the reverse.

Each 1980 South African Krugerrand 1/4 oz Gold Coin is packaged in a plastic flip to protect its condition. This particular year is notable for being the first to offer fractional-ounce Krugerrands. The coin is made from 22-karat gold, composed of 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper to enhance its strength.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 1980 South African Krugerrand Gold Coin, youll find Otto Schultzs depiction of Paul Kruger. The former South African president is shown in profile facing to the left. The words SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA circle the design, reflecting the countrys dual language usage at the time the series started.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1980 Krugerrand 1/4 oz Gold Coin presents the image of a springbok antelope in motion. This elegant design by Coert Steynberg has become a defining element of the Krugerrand series. The animal is captured mid-leap, highlighting its natural beauty and agility. The inscriptions read 1/4 KRUGERRAND, 1980, and FYNGOUD 1/4 OZ FINE GOLD.
