The US Mint sold 3,554,806 of the 1980 Proof Sets, which was a slight decrease from the previous year. While the 1980 Proof Set still contained 6 coins, and the face value of those coins remained the same, the US Mint increased the price from $9.00 to $10.00. This was the second year that the Proof Set included the Susan B. Anthony Dollar, which was the first circulating coin to have a woman featured on it. The Proof coins were intended to have a cameo or deep cameo finish. This set was made by the US Mint in San Francisco. Presently, Provident Metals has the 1980 US Mint Proof Set available for purchase.

Obverse

The obverse of the Anthony Dollar features a right-facing profile of Susan B. Anthony, the social reformer. This smaller dollar initially had a representation of Lady Liberty on the obverse, however, numerous organizations and individuals within Congress requested that it depict a real woman. Susan B. Anthony garnered the most support from numerous sources. Both of the obverse designs were the creation of Frank Gasparro. Inscriptions are LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 1980.

Reverse

The reverse of the Anthony Dollar retained the reverse design from the Eisenhower Dollar. Its an engraving of the Apollo 11 mission insignia, featuring an eagle landing on the moon. Included is an image of the earth, just above and to the left of the eagles head. This design was also created by Frank Gasparro. Inscriptions are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and ONE DOLLAR.

History

Packaging for the 1980 Proof Sets underwent a down-sizing due to the smaller Anthony Dollar. The coins were now placed in individual slots in a red plastic insert rather than being sealed in individual rings. The red plastic insert was sealed in a two-piece, clear plastic case, which can be slid into a black plastic sleeve. The black plastic sleeve can serve as a stand for the coins. The outer cardboard box had a single opening at the top to slide the main holder into.
