The Mexican Mint unveiled the Mexican Libertad bullion series in 1981 with the release of three gold bullion coins, followed quickly by silver bullion coins in 1982. While the silver coins gained better traction from the start, the gold coins would sit on the sidelines for another decade, making the issues from 1981 great pieces for collectors. Right now, you can get 1981 Mexican Libertad 1 oz Gold Coins online at Provident Metals.

The 1 oz gold coin from the 1981 Mexican Libertad Gold release is a unique piece of the history of this series. The 1981 release was not followed up by any other issues in 1981, making it the only 1 oz gold coin from the decade and the first-ever coin in the history of the series.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1981 Mexican Libertad Gold Coins is a front-facing effigy of Victory based on the Winged Victory statue at the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column. Here, Victory appears as she did on the 1921 Gold Centenario, her right hand extended with a laurel wreath and her left holding a set of broken chains. The design field includes inscriptions of 1981, OM, and 1 ONZA ORO PURO.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1981 Mexican Libertad 1 oz Gold Coin comes with an image of the national coat of arms. The Mexican seal shows a golden eagle on a prickly pear cactus as it battles with a serpent. The field includes an oak-and-laurel wreath beneath the central design elements and the inscription ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS above.

History

The design on the 1981 Mexican Libertad Gold Coin is based on the 1921 Gold Centenario, a coin the Mexican Mint issued for circulation that year to mark the centennial of the nations independence from Spain. Those 50 Peso coins inspired the designs on the Mexican Libertad bullion series, but those same designs are no longer in use on the coins as seen on these 1981 coins. In 2000, the Mexican Mint unveiled a modernized image of Winged Victory on the obverse and an enhanced design on the reverse that added 10 small versions of the coat of arms from throughout Mexican history.
