The Chinese Gold Panda Series first appeared in 1982 and included several gold coin weights, such as this 1/2 oz option. The series became well known for featuring new Giant Panda artwork every year, giving each release a distinct look. Today, Provident Metals offers the 1982 Chinese Panda 1/2 oz Gold Coin.
Highlights:
Each 1982 Chinese Panda 1/2 oz Gold Coin is offered here in protective plastic. This coin comes from the first year of the Gold Panda Series and had a limited mintage of 13,391 coins. The Giant Panda shown on the coin is a well-known species native to China. Though pandas are technically carnivores, theyve adapted to a bamboo-heavy diet and need to eat large quantities each day to stay nourished.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1982 Chinese Panda Gold Coin features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This structure is the centerpiece of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, a significant religious and historical site. The design captures the stairs leading up to the entrance of the building.
Reverse
On the reverse of 1982 Panda 1/2 oz Gold Coins, the Giant Panda is shown seated with a bamboo branch in its paws. Despite their classification as carnivores, pandas rely on bamboo for nearly all their nutrition. Their short digestive systems arent ideal for processing plants, so they spend up to 16 hours a day consuming 20 to 40 pounds of bamboo.
History
When the Chinese Mint released the Gold Panda Series in 1982, it included four gold weights: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. A 1/20 oz coin was introduced in 1983. Each year, a new panda design is used on the reverse, with the one exception being the 2002 release, which repeated the image from 2001.
