The South African Gold Krugerrand series introduced fractional weights in 1980, giving buyers a more affordable way to own gold. With new options like 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins, it became easier for a range of collectors and investors to add gold to their portfolios. Today, Provident Metals offers 1982 South African Krugerrand 1/4 oz Gold Coins online.
Highlights:
Every 1982 South African Krugerrand 1/4 oz Gold Coin is packaged in a protective plastic flip. The Gold Krugerrand design has stayed the same across all weights since the very first 1 oz coin was introduced in 1967. Made from 22-karat gold, these coins include 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper to make them more durable.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1982 South African Krugerrand Gold Coin displays the portrait of Paul Kruger. This effigy was originally created in the 1890s for coins issued during his time as president of the South African Republic. Kruger was such an important figure in the country’s history that he became affectionately known as Oom Paul in Afrikaans, meaning Uncle Paul. The inscriptions include SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1982 Krugerrand 1/4 oz Gold Coin shows the Springbok antelope, a symbol closely tied to South Africa. This antelope, native to southern Africa, has been featured on the nations coins for decades and is a lasting part of its heritage. Inscriptions here include 1/4 KRUGERRAND, 1982, and FYNGOUD 1/4 OZ FINE GOLD.
History
The fractional Gold Krugerrands feature the same recognizable designs seen on the full-ounce version. On the obverse is Paul Krugers portrait, and the reverse displays a Springbok antelope. These smaller coins opened up gold ownership to more people when gold prices were on the rise in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
