With the discontinuation of the Susan B. Anthony Dollar, this was the first year of the return to a 5 coin Proof Set. The Proof Set packaging was not changed yet so the US Mint included a Proof Treasure Token where the Dollar had been. The face value of the Proof Set decreased from $1.91 to $0.91 without the Dollar, however, the Mint left the issue price at $11.00. In spite of that, the Mint still sold 3,857,479 of the 1982 Proof Sets, which was only a small drop in sales from the 1981 Set. The 1982 Proof coins typically have strong deep cameo finishes. This Set was made by the US Mint in San Francisco. Currently, Provident Metals is offering the 1982 US Mint Proof Set for purchase online.

Highlights:

  • Set ships in a black plastic frame with an outer box!
  • Contains five 1982 coins from the US Mint!
  • The obverse and reverse designs vary per coin.
  • Each coins respective face value is in US dollars.
  • Total of 3,857,479 proof sets were issued in 1982.
  • Proof visuals.
  • Please note some sets may be missing the outer envelope/sleeve/box.

Each Proof Set contains one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar. Also included is a token from the Department of the Treasury, struck in bronze.

Designs

Up until 1982, the Lincoln Cent was composed of 95% copper. As copper prices began increasing in the mid-1970s, it caused a conundrum for the US Mint. The cost of making the Lincoln Cent was comparable to its monetary value and people were starting to hoard them. Realizing that changes to the composition of the Lincoln Cent were going to be inevitable, in 1974, Congress passed a law giving the Secretary of the Treasury the power to make a change to the Cents composition whenever necessary. Beginning in 1981, as the price of copper started increasing once again, the Mint moved forward with changing the composition. In 1982, the Mint made half of the 1982 pennies of 95% copper and, as the changeover was completed, the other half were made of 97% zinc with a plating of copper.

History

The 1982 Proof Sets were the last sets to utilize the down-sized packaging created in 1980. The coins were set in individual slots in a red plastic insert, which was sealed in a clear plastic case. A black plastic sleeve which served to protect the Set and could be used as a stand – slid over the clear plastic case. The outer cardboard box had a single opening at the top to slide the main holder into.
