In 1983, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin Program entered its fifth year of production. This year stood out because it marked the first full year that the 1 oz gold coin came with .9999 gold purity, as well as the first full year fractional sizes were offered. Today, you can find 1983 Canadian Maple Leaf 1/10 oz Gold Coins available through Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1983 Canadian Maple Leaf 1/10 oz Gold Coin comes secured in a plastic flip. The fractional Maple Leaf was introduced in 1982, and for the second year in 1983, the mintage of the 1/10 oz size increased by nearly 60,000 coins compared to the first issue.
Obverse
On the obverse of 1983 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins is Queen Elizabeth II. This second portrait of the Queen was designed in 1964 by Arnold Machin and used by the Royal Canadian Mint starting in 1979. It shows the Queen in right-profile at age 39, and the design remained on Maple Leafs through 1989. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, 5 DOLLARS, and 1983.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1983 Maple Leaf 1/10 oz Gold Coin features the sugar maple leaf. Designed by Walter Ott and introduced with the first coins in 1979, this image has become the defining design of the Maple Leaf series across all metals and weights. Inscriptions read CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1/10 OZ OR PUR.
History
The maple leaf has been linked with Canada for centuries. Adopted by French Canadians in the 1700s, the symbols importance grew in the 19th century and became even more visible when used in military insignia during World War I and on Canadas circulating coins.
