Chinese Panda Gold Coins set a benchmark for other coin programs to follow. Introduced in 1982, the Chinese Panda was the worlds first program to use new designs on one side of the coin each year. While the Giant Panda species is the focus of the collection, its appearance changes each year. Today, you have the opportunity to get 1983 Chinese Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coins online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
When the Chinese Panda was introduced in 1982, the Chinese Mint offered the coins in weights of 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold. One year later, in 1983, the mint introduced these 1/20 oz gold coins for investors.
Obverse
The obverse side of 1983 Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coins bears the likeness of the Temple of Heaven’s most prominent building, the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests. This structure is part of a larger complex that includes several smaller buildings. In addition to the image, the coins are also stamped with the nation of issue and the year of issue.
Reverse
Featuring on the reverse of the 1983 Chinese Panda Gold Coin is an image of the panda, which is commonly referred to as the Giant Panda to avoid confusion with the red panda. This bear species is indigenous to the mountainous highlands of south-central China and subsists mostly on bamboo, accounting for 99% of its diet.
History
The Chinese Mint has made two big changes to the Chinese Panda Gold Series over the last several decades. In 2001, the face value of each coin increased. In 2016, the mint switched from Troy oz weights to Gram-based weights.
