The South African Krugerrand is one of the most established gold bullion coins, celebrated worldwide. As the first modern bullion series, it set the standard for gold investment coins and continues to be highly valued by collectors and investors alike. Provident Metals now offers 1983 South African Krugerrand 1/10 oz Gold Coins for those looking to add a piece of history to their collection.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic flip!
  • 4th issue of 1/10 oz Gold Krugerrands!
  • Contains 1/10 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Obverse depicts Paul Kruger.
  • Reverse includes a Springbok antelope.

Each 1983 South African Krugerrand 1/10 oz Gold Coin is safely packaged in a protective plastic flip. Initially, the Krugerrand was minted solely as a 1 oz gold coin starting in 1967. In 1980, the South African Mint introduced fractional-ounce coins, including this 1/10 oz version, giving collectors more options for investing in gold.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1983 South African Krugerrand Gold Coin features Paul Kruger in left-profile relief, a design dating back to the 1890s originally used on South African Pound gold coins. The inscriptions here include SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA.

Reverse

On the reverse, the 1983 1/10 oz Gold Krugerrand highlights a Springbok antelope, one of South Africas iconic symbols. The antelope is depicted in a movement called pronking, a distinctive series of leaps that showcases the animals agility and strength, capturing the spirit of South Africa. The inscriptions here read 1/10 OZ KRUGERRAND, 1983, FYNGOUD, and 1/10 OZ FINE GOLD.

History

When the Krugerrand debuted in 1967, it became the worlds first modern gold bullion coin designed for private ownership. The coins name pays tribute to Paul Kruger, former president of the South African Republic, and the rand, South Africas official currency, symbolizing the nations heritage.
