The South African Mint and Rand Refinery have teamed up on the issue of South African Krugerrand coins since 1967. The gold bullion coins are named for Paul Kruger, former President of the South African Republic, and the modern fiat currency of the Republic of South Africa, the Rand. Provident Metals now has 1983 South African Krugerrand 1 oz Gold Coins available to purchase online.
Highlights:
When you purchase the 1983 South African Krugerrand 1 oz Gold Coin online from Provident Metals, you will receive a coin that is packaged in an individual plastic flip. The final mintage of 3,386,000 coins in 1983 made this date mark the fourth highest in the history of the series, to this point, and was the last coin to surpass 3 million coins in a single year.
Obverse
The obverse of 1983 South African Krugerrand Gold Coins comes with a portrait of Paul Kruger. The first democratically elected President of the South African Republic, Kruger served four terms in this position, but concluded his final term in exile. Kruger is captured here in left-profile relief with inscriptions of SUID AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA on this side.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1983 Krugerrand 1 oz Gold Coin, you will find the image of the Springbok antelope. The official emblem of the modern Republic of South Africa, the Springbok is shown here in right-profile relief pronking on the plains of South Africa. Inscriptions read KRUGERRAND, 1983, FYNGOUD, and 1 OZ FINE GOLD.
History
South African Krugerrand Gold Coins have been available since 1967. Starting in the 1980s, demand for the coins would shrink as other gold bullion coins hit the market and Western economic sanctions crippled South Africas ability to sell the coins around the world.
