The US Mint began issuing these official Mint Sets in 1947, containing uncirculated specimens of each of the coins used in circulation of that particular year. The coins in these Sets are in brilliant uncirculated condition, and are issued in official government packaging. These Mint Sets are generally more affordable than the Proof Sets, making them far more appealing to existing collectors or to those wishing to begin collecting. The Sets quality and authenticity are guaranteed since they are issued by the government. The 1984 Mint Set consists of 10 coins. Provident Metals is currently offering the 1984 US Mint Set for purchase online.

Highlights:

  • Set received in sealed cellophane packaging!
  • Set contains ten 1984 coins from the US Mint!
  • The obverse and reverse designs vary per coin.
  • Each coins respective face value is in US dollars.
  • Total of 1,832,857 mint sets were issued in 1984.
  • Please note some sets may be missing the outer envelope/sleeve/box.
  • Also note some of the packaging may not be in perfect condition.

The US Mint Sets were not issued in 1982 nor 1983 due to federal budget concerns. As a result, in 1984 when sales were resumed, they experienced a significant decline from 1981 sales. Sales of Mint Sets went from 2,908,145 sets in 1981 to 1,832,857 sets in 1984. With the resumption of sales in 1984, the Sets came in more colorful, redesigned packaging. The packaging would continue to change each year after that, to provide some variety to this long offered product. The Sets had an original issue price of $7.00, which was also down from the $11.00 issue price of the 1981 Sets.

Designs

Each Mint Set contains two packages one package containing 5 coins from the Denver Mint and one package containing 5 coins from the Philadelphia Mint. Each Mints package contains one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar. Also included in each package is a cent-sized token indicating which Mint those particular coins are from.

History

The US Mint began issuing these Mint Sets of uncirculated coins in 1947. They have been issued annually since then, with a few interruptions. The quality of the coins has improved through the years as has the packaging of the Sets. Some of the Mint Sets have had more appeal to collectors particularly the 1970, 1973, 1981, and 1996 Sets as they contained coins not issued for circulation.
