The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is a well-known bullion coin produced every year by the Royal Canadian Mint. Introduced back in 1979, this coin program is one of the longest-running in the world. Over time, it has grown to include several different weights and metals. Right now, you can order 1985 Canadian Maple Leaf 1/4 oz Gold Coins at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1985 Canadian Maple Leaf 1/4 oz Gold Coin is housed in a plastic flip for protection. These coins are struck in 24-karat gold and were part of the shift in 1982 to pure .9999 fine gold for the series, a move that made the Maple Leaf one of the first gold coins to reach this purity.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1985 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II that was introduced in 1979. It was originally created for British coins and shows a young version of the Queen. This design remained in use on Canadian Gold Maple Leafs until 1989, when it was replaced with a new portrait created by a Canadian artist. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, 10 DOLLARS, and 1985.
Reverse
The reverse side of 1985 Maple Leaf 1/4 oz Gold Coins displays a sugar maple leaf, a national symbol of Canada. This design by Walter Ott has been used on all Maple Leaf bullion coins since 1979 and continues to appear across the programs gold, silver, platinum, and palladium releases. Inscriptions read CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1/4 OZ OR PUR.
History
The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf began in 1979 with just the 1 oz gold version. In 1982, the Mint expanded the series to include 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins, followed by other sizes in later years. Coins from the early years used a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II that was designed by British sculptor Arnold Machin in 1965. It was the final Canadian design to be created by an artist from the United Kingdom.
