Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of 1985 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins. The Queen has reigned over the United Kingdom since 1952 and her portrait is regularly updated on coins across the Commonwealth. The image of Queen Elizabeth II has been updated four times on Canadian coins, with the 1985 coin boasting the second-generation effigy of the Queen. Created in 1964 by Arnold Machin, this right-profile portrait of the Queen was used on Canadian coins from 1965 to 1989. Inscriptions on this side include ELIZABETH II, 1985, and 50 DOLLARS.

Reverse

In the reverse design of the 1985 Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coin, the design element features a large sugar maple leaf. The national emblem of Canada, this sugar maple leaf is accompanied by inscriptions of CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1 OZ OR PUR.

History

Since 1979, Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins have been available to investors each year. From 1979 to November 1982, the series offered only a 1 oz gold option with .999 fineness. Starting in November 1982, the fineness of the coins was enhanced to .9999 and a series of fractional-ounce coins later joined the series. The 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins were introduced first, followed by 1/2 oz, 1/20 oz, and 1 Gram gold coins, in order.
