The Chinese Gold Panda Series is a well-known gold bullion collection introduced in 1982 by the Chinese Mint. These coins are admired for their annually changing panda designs. While newer issues are struck in gram-based weights, earlier releases were produced in Troy-ounce denominations. Right now, 1985 Chinese Panda 1/4 oz Gold Coins are available at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Ships in a sealed plastic pouch!
  • 4th issue in the Gold Panda Series!
  • Features a unique panda cub design!
  • Contains 1/4 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Issued with a face value of 25 Yuan, backed by the Chinese government.
  • The obverse shows the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • The reverse features a panda cub grasping a bamboo shoot.

Each 1985 Chinese Panda 1/4 oz Gold Coin is individually packaged in a sealed plastic pouch. This release was the fourth in the series, continuing the tradition of showcasing a new panda design each year. While modern Gold Pandas are issued in grams, this 1/4 oz coin is a classic example of the series earlier format.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1985 Chinese Panda Gold Coin features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, the most prominent building in Beijings Temple of Heaven complex. Constructed in the early 15th century, this site was historically used by Chinese emperors to offer prayers for a bountiful harvest. The inscriptions read the nation of issue and 1985.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1985 Panda 1/4 oz Gold Coin, a young panda cub is depicted clinging to a bamboo shoot. Panda cubs begin exploring their surroundings at around five or six months old, often engaging in playful activities like climbing, rolling, and interacting with their environment. Inscriptions here read 25 (Yuan), 999, 1/4 OZ, and AU.

History

In 1985, the Gold Panda design captured the playful nature of young pandas. At birth, panda cubs are small, blind, and entirely dependent on their mothers. As they grow, they quickly become active and curious, often climbing and playing with bamboo, just like the cub featured on this coin.
