The release of the 1986 Proof British 3-Coin Gold Set by the Royal Mint of England marked the first time in the mints history a commemorative gold legal tender coin set was released to celebrate a sporting event. Edinburgh, Scotland hosted the 1986 Commonwealth Games from July 24, 1986, to August 2, 1986. This was the second time that Scotland hosted the Commonwealth Games, with the previous event taking place in Scotland in 1970.

Obverse

On the obverse of all three coins in the 1986 Proof British 3-Coin Gold Set is the image of Queen Elizabeth II. In this design, Her Majesty is shown in the third-generation design created by Raphael Maklouf. This design with the Queen wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown was used on British denominations from 1984 to 1997.

Reverse

The reverse of the Gold Sovereign and Gold Half Sovereign coin in this 1986 Proof British 3-Coin Gold Set feature the historic St. George design. In this work of art from Benedetto Pistrucci, St. George rides his horse as he uses a spear to slay a dragon. This image has appeared on British Sovereign Gold Coins since 1817. For the reverse of the 2 Pound sterling gold coin in this set, the Scottish thistle features over the cross of St. Andrew. The thistle is the official flower of Scotland and honors the host nation.

History

A majority of Commonwealth nations boycotted the XIII Commonwealth Games. For the most part, the boycott centered on the government of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher continuing Britains sporting links with the apartheid government in South Africa. The majority of the 32 nations that boycotted the games were located in Asia, the Caribbean, and Africa. The games went on to be known as the all-white games.
