Coin Highlights:
The Singapore Mint began production of its Lunar Coin Series in 1984. The Chinese Lunar Calendar runs in twelve-year cycles and names each of the twelve years after an animal. Legend has it that the Lord Buddha summoned all the animals to come to him before he departed from earth. Only twelve came to bid him farewell and as a reward, he named a year after each one in the order they arrived. The Chinese believe the animal ruling the year in which a person is born has a profound influence on personality, saying: “This is the animal that hides in your heart.” The coins were minted in pure .999 fine gold and are available in 1/20, 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1-ounce sizes. Mintages were very low for the Singapore Lunar Gold Coin Series.
Obverse
For the obverse field of the 1986 Singapore Lunar Year of the Tiger 1 oz Gold Coins, you will be pleased to find the Singapore Coat of Arms engraved. Its iconic motto is a translation of the phrase Onward Singapore. There are an array of other inscriptions with Thai characters and Chinese characters. Inscribed on the border are the words Singapura and Singapore.
Reverse
For the reverse field of the 1986 Singapore Lunar Year of the Tiger 1 oz Gold Coins, you will be excited to see the gorgeous image of the tiger. It is depicted to be a crouching tiger who looks to its side with intense focus. The strength and power of its form are detailed in the engraving.
