If you are looking to add to your coin collection, or looking to start a coin collection, and you want to do that with some coins in brilliant uncirculated condition, official US Mint Sets are the way to go. In 1947, the US Mint began issuing sets of uncirculated specimens of each of the coins currently in circulation that particular year. These Mint Sets are issued in official government packaging, and their quality and authenticity are guaranteed. And these Mint Sets are generally more affordable than similar Proof Sets. The 1986 Mint Set consists of 10 coins. Provident Metals is currently offering the 1986 US Mint Set for purchase online.
Highlights:
The 1986 Mint Set had an original issue price of $7.00 but is often sold at a premium. This is quite unlike many of the Mint Sets from the surrounding years. After a 2 year hiatus from issuing Mint Sets in 1982 and 1983, the US Mint resumed issuing them in 1984. While mintage sales in 1981 (prior to the hiatus) were 2,908,145 sets, after the hiatus they were falling. From 1,832,857 sets in 1984 to 1,710,571 sets in 1985, down to 1,153,536 sets in 1986. This was the lowest mintage number in over 20 years. Being harder to find has resulted in higher prices for these 1986 Mint Sets.
Designs
The Mint Set is made up of two packages. One package is from the Denver Mint. It contains 5 coins as well as a cent-sized token identifying the package as from the Denver Mint. The other package is from the Philadelphia Mint. It too contains 5 coins as well as a cent-sized token identifying the package as from the Philadelphia Mint. Each Mints package contains one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar.
History
The US Mint began issuing these Mint Sets of brilliant uncirculated coins in 1947. They have been issued annually since then, with a few interruptions. The number of coins in the sets has varied through the years. But the quality of the coins and the packaging of the sets has improved as time has passed. A few of the Mint Sets have had more appeal to collectors. In particular, the 1970, 1973, and 1981 Mint Sets included dollar coins not issued for circulation. And the 1996 Mint Sets included the Roosevelt Dime struck at the West Point Mint and issued only in sets.
