Gold Coin Highlights
- Mint: United States Mint
- Year of Issue: 1987
- Composition: One troy ounce of .9166 fine gold
The obverse of the 1987 American Gold Eagle features the famous Augustus Saint-Gaudens motif. Lady Liberty is shown stepping out from a rising sun while holding a torch in one hand. In her other hand, Lady Liberty is clutching an olive branch. The inscription “LIBERTY” sits within a ring of stars, and the year of issue can be found within the sun’s rays. The 1987 issue is one of the few dates in the American Gold Eagle series where the date is expressed in Roman Numerals.
The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, displays a male Bald Eagle flying back to his nested family with an olive branch in his talon. Inscriptions of “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” are paired with the coin’s weight, purity, and denomination.
About the 1987 1 oz Gold Eagle NGC MS69
Gold Eagles from the 1980s are much harder to find than those issued in more recent years. In near-perfect MS69 condition, they become ever scarcer. After decades of moving from vault to vault, many early-date Gold Eagles show minor nicks and abrasions. In order for a coin to qualify as MS69, it must be virtually immaculate with no tolerance for major flaws or blemishes.
These 1987 1 oz Gold Eagles, graded MS69 by NGC, have managed to survive in pristine condition. They are perfect for those who want to own a Roman Numeral 1 oz Gold Eagle in superb condition, but do not want to pay the massive price tag for an MS70.
Each 1987 Gold Eagle in MS69 is delivered in its sonically-sealed NGC slab.
