The 1987 American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin enjoyed the highest mintage mark in series history from its release until 2007. In 2008, as the Great Recession set in the demand for American Eagle Silver Coins began to skyrocket. That year saw the first mintage to surpass the 1987 coin with a total of 20.5 million coins. From there, demand would only continue to rise through 2015 when a total of 47 million coins were issued.

Obverse

Walking Liberty was originally designed in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman and features on the obverse of the 1987 American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin. The design was originally used on the US half dollar through 1947. The design shows Liberty walking toward the sun on the horizon with the American flag draped over her shoulders.

Reverse

An American bald eagle is shown on the reverse of the 1987 American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins in the heraldic eagle design. First created in 1792, this emblem of the national government has been modified countless times in American history. This particular version of the seal was modified in 1986 by John Mercanti for the American Eagle Silver Coins.

History

The American Eagle Silver Coins saw incredible demand through the Great Recession and the economic recovery that followed. From 2008 to 2015, demand only continued to rise with the series setting several record mintages during this time. Four different release dates surpassed 40 million coins in one year.
