When you purchase a 1987-S Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin in this listing, you receive a coin with an NGC PF70 certification. This grade is issued to coins that have full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws of any kind on the design elements or background fields. Each coin also has a DCAM label. This stands for deep-cameo and refers to the visual brilliance of each specimen. These coins have strong, frosted elements that contrast with the deeply-mirrored, clear background fields.

Obverse

Walking Liberty is depicted on the obverse side of 1987-S Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins. Her figure is shown here in left-profile relief as she walks from right to left across the surface of the coin. She reaches out toward the sun on the horizon with one hand and carries the branches of oak and laurel in the other. Draped over her shoulders is the American flag that flutters in the breeze as she walks.

Reverse

The heraldic eagle of the United States is depicted on the reverse of all 1987 Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins. First created in 1792, the heraldic eagle is the national seal and has been modified several different times for various denominations of US currency. This particular design was modified in 1986 by John Mercanti for this series. It bears similarities to other versions of the seal, with its most notable difference being the tight, triangular cluster of 13 stars above the eagles head.

History

The Proof American Eagle Silver Coin debuted in 1986 with sales of 1.4 million coins, a figure that remains the highest in the programs history today. The 1987 coin has the fifth-highest mintage in the series still having sold 904,723 coins.
