The Proof American Eagle is a highly-coveted collectible coin. Certain date marks are more sought-after than others in the series, with older date marks and anniversary date marks among the hardest to find. The 1986 date mark remains the most popular, a common feature of any proof series as it was the debut. Though the 1987 date mark saw a significant drop in demand, it still boasted a high mintage that, combined with its age, makes it popular with collectors. Right now, you can buy 1987-S Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins online in near-perfect condition from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with an individual protective plastic slab courtesy of the PCGS!
  • 2nd year of release for Proof American Eagle Silver Coins!
  • Final mintage of 904,732 silver coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • Bears a face value of $1 (USD) fully backed by the American government.
  • Issued a Grade of PR69 by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
  • DCAM specimen.
  • Walking Liberty is found on the obverse of the coin.
  • Heraldic eagle of the United States on the reverse.
  • S mint mark from the San Francisco Mint.

With your purchase of a 1987-S Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin through this Provident Metals listing, you will receive a coin that has been given a near-perfect grade by the PCGS. Coins in this condition exhibit full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor flaws acceptable. Examples of those flaws include only minuscule contact marks or hairlines that must be found outside of the primary focal points. DCAM specimens are proof coins with exceptional contrast between the design strike and the background field. In this case, the design strike has a strong frost on the visuals while the background field is clear and mirrored.

Obverse

Walking Liberty can be found on the obverse side of 1987-S Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins. The design features Liberty in left-profile relief as she walks toward a mountain on the horizon with the sun rising over it. Libertys right hand is extended, while her left hand carries the branches of oak and laurel. Her figure is draped in the American flag and the field includes inscriptions of Liberty, In God We Trust, and 1987.

Reverse

The heraldic eagle of the United States is featured on the reverse of 1987-S Proof American Eagle Silver Coins. John Mercanti modified this historic emblem for use on the American Eagle Silver Coins in 1986. It includes a triangular cluster of 13 stars over the head of the eagle, with the bird supporting the US national shield. It is also shown clutching the olive branch of peace and the arrows of war. Inscriptions on this face include United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, and 1 oz. Fine Silver One Dollar. There is also an S mint mark from the San Francisco Mint on this field of the coin.

History

The mintage of the 1987 Proof American Eagle Silver Coin fell 40% from the year before, dropping from 1.446 million to just over 904,000 coins.
