Purchase a 1987 official US Mint Set and receive 10 coins in brilliant uncirculated condition that are examples of coins actually in circulation that year. They are issued in official government packaging, and their quality and authenticity are guaranteed. Half of the coins in these Sets were struck in the Denver Mint and the other half in the Philadelphia Mint. And Mint Sets are generally more affordable than their counterpart Proof Sets, making them a great way to add to, or start, your coin collection. Provident Metals is currently offering the 1987 US Mint Set for purchase online.
Following 1982 and 1983 when Mint Sets were not issued, their sales dropped consecutively each year from 1984 to 1986. However, sales in 1987 roared back to 2,890,758 sets! These 1987 sales were more than double the sales of 1986. In fact, these 1987 sales even surpassed the combined Mint Sets sales for 1985 and 1986. But what caused this increase? It has been attributed to demand for the 1987 Kennedy Half Dollar. The Kennedy Half Dollar was not struck for circulation in 1987, therefore, making the only way to secure one was by purchasing a Mint Set.
Like most Mint Sets, the 1987 Set includes two packages. The first package has 5 coins that are from the Denver Mint. The second package has 5 coins that are from the Philadelphia Mint. Included in each package is a cent-sized token one with a D for Denver and the other with a P for Philadelphia to indicate which Mint the coins originate from. Each of these packages contains one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar.
The makeup of the Mint Sets has been fairly consistent through the years. However, there have been a couple of years where the Sets have been more popular with collectors than usual. Three of those Sets are the ones from 1970, 1973, and 1981. The 1970 Kennedy Half Dollar was struck in 40% silver and was not issued for circulation. The 1973 Eisenhower Dollar was not issued for circulation. And the 1981 Susan B. Anthony Dollar was struck only for inclusion in the Mint Sets.
