The Chinese Gold Panda Series has been an investment staple since its debut in 1982. Initially, the coins were issued in Troy ounce weights with lower face values compared to the denominations seen in later years. The series originally included 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins, with the 1/20 oz size added in 1983. Right now, Provident Metals has the 1987-Y Chinese Panda 1/10 oz Gold Coin available for purchase online.

Highlights:

  • Ships in a sealed plastic pouch!
  • 6th release of the Gold Panda Series!
  • Large Date variety!
  • Contains 1/10 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Assigned a face value of 10 Yuan by China.
  • Obverse displays the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • Reverse features a panda drinking from a pond.
  • Y mint mark from the Shenyang Mint.

Each 1987-Y Chinese Panda 1/10 oz Gold Coin is housed in a sealed plastic pouch. These coins include a Y mint mark, identifying them as products of the Shenyang Mint. Additionally, this version features the Large Date variety, a classification based on the larger font used for the date numerals.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1987-Y Chinese Panda Gold Coin carries the design that has remained constant throughout the series. The image shows the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, a well-known structure within the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. This design has appeared on all Chinese Gold Panda coins since 1982.

Reverse

For the reverse of the 1987-Y Panda 1/10 oz Gold Coin, a unique design was created for that years release. It portrays a giant panda standing beside a small pond, lowering its head to take a drink. Gentle ripples form where its mouth touches the water, and bamboo shoots are seen growing nearby.

History

The giant panda species is native to Chinas mountainous regions, including Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu. These locations provide dense bamboo forests, the pandas main source of food. The combination of cool temperatures and remote terrain makes these areas ideal habitats for pandas.
