The Chinese Gold Panda Series has been a popular choice among collectors and investors since its launch in 1982. The series originally followed Troy ounce-based weights, though changes in 2001 adjusted the face values. The first release included 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins, with the 1/20 oz size introduced a year later in 1983. Today, Provident Metals is pleased to offer the 1987-Y Chinese Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coins for purchase online.

Coin Highlights:

  • Ships in a sealed plastic pouch!
  • Represents the 6th year of the Gold Panda Series!
  • Contains 1/20 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Bears a face value of 5 Yuan, backed by China.
  • The obverse features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • The reverse design showcases a panda drinking from a pond.
  • Struck at the Shenyang Mint, identified by the Y mint mark.

Each 1987-Y Chinese Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coinis carefully housed in a sealed plastic pouch to protect its condition. The Y mint mark on the coin indicates that it was minted at the Shenyang Mint. While 1987 marked the sixth year of the Gold Panda Series, the 1/20 oz denomination had been part of the series for only five years, having been added in 1983, one year after the program began.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 1987-Y Chinese Panda Gold Coin, youll find an image of the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. Located within Beijings Temple of Heaven complex, this iconic structure has been featured on the obverse of every Gold Panda coin since the series began in 1982.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1987-Y Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coinfeatures a detailed scene of a giant panda. The panda is depicted leaning down to drink from a pond, creating ripples in the water. Bamboo plants in the background reinforce the pandas natural environment.

History

Giant Pandas are native to Chinas central mountainous regions, thriving at elevations between 5,000 and 10,000 feet. These regions offer an ideal habitat with dense bamboo forests, misty climates, and abundant water sources. The cool and humid environment provides everything pandas need to survive, including a steady supply of bamboo, their primary food source.
