The 1988 American Eagle Gold coin marks the third year of release for the American Gold Eagle coin collection which was first introduced to its global audience in 1986. The coins are struck in a composition of 22 Karat gold which indicates that it is made up of 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver.The US Mint struck only .900 gold coins going back to at least 1837, with some denominations featuring crown gold alloys as far back as 1832.
Obverse
When you are faced with the obverse of the coin, you will feast your eyes on the iconic Lady Liberty design which was sculpted by the critically acclaimed engraver, Augustus Saint-Gaudens who was commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt to come up with a design to be featured on this particular coin.
