The Platinum Koala program began in 1988 and marked the first major platinum bullion series launched by an industrialized nation. When the series debuted, it included four weights: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. These options remained a core part of the series until production ended in 2000.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1988 Australian Koala Platinum Coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The design also includes the coins monetary denomination and inscriptions identifying Australia as the issuing nation. This particular effigy is known as the third-generation portrait of Her Majesty and was designed in 1985 by Raphael Maklouf. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, 25 DOLLARS, and AUSTRALIA.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1988 Koala 1/4 oz Platinum Coin displays the first design in the series annually changing artwork. It depicts a seated koala facing forward in raised relief against a clean field. Surrounding inscriptions include the series name, year of issue, and the coins weight and purity. The reverse artwork was created by Michael Tracey. Inscriptions read THE AUSTRALIAN KOALA, 1/4 OZ 9995 PLATINUM, 1988, and the MT initials of the designer.

History

The Australian Platinum Koala Series was discontinued after 2000 as interest in platinum bullion declined across international markets. From 1988 to 2000, the program expanded beyond its original weight lineup. In 1991, the Perth Mint introduced a 1/20 oz coin. Starting in 1992, additional large-format issues were offered, including 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kilogram platinum coins.
