The Chinese Gold Panda series was first introduced in 1982 and has since become a widely recognized annual release from the Peoples Republic of China. These coins are admired for their detailed panda artwork and high gold content. Provident Metals now offers the 1988 Chinese Panda 1/4 oz Gold Coin for purchase online.
Highlights:
Each 1988 Chinese Panda 1/4 oz Gold Coin is packaged in a sealed plastic pouch for protection. This year marked the seventh release in the series and included the same design across all five sizes issued by the Chinese Mint.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 1988 Chinese Panda Gold Coin, youll see the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This building is part of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing and has been featured on the obverse of every Gold Panda coin since the beginning of the series. Around the temple image are inscriptions identifying the country and the mintage year in Chinese script.
Reverse
The reverse of this 1988 Panda 1/4 oz Gold Coin shows a peaceful image of a panda seated while holding a bamboo shoot. This image highlights the close relationship pandas share with bamboo, which plays a central role in their survival. Because bamboo plants bloom and then die in long, unpredictable cycles, pandas have historically struggled with food scarcity during these periods.
History
Pandas are unique in that they survive almost entirely on bamboo, even though they belong to the carnivore family. Their bodies have adapted with features such as enlarged molars, strong jaw muscles, and a special thumb-like extension to help them grasp and eat bamboo. To meet their needs, pandas consume large amounts daily, ranging from 26 to 84 pounds.
