The lowest-minted coin in the 1980s during the early era of the Proof American Eagle Silver Series was the 1988 coin. Released just three years after the debut of the series, demand for the coins had already fallen to one-third the level of the 1986 issue. Provident Metals now has 1988-S Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins available to you for purchase online in near-perfect condition.
Highlights:
When you purchase these 1988-S Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins online from Provident Metals, youll receive a beautiful early Proof Eagle Silver Coin that is in near-perfect condition. PR69 coins showcase full, original mint luster and no more than two minor detracting flaws. Acceptable detractions at this level include only minuscule contact marks or hairlines that must be located outside the primary focal fields. In addition to a near-perfect grade, these coins earned a DCAM label. This stands for deep-cameo and refers to the impressive contrast between the strong frost on the design elements and the deeply-mirrored, clear field in the background.
Obverse
The obverse of 1988-S Proof American Eagle Silver Coins features the image of Walking Liberty. This iconic design was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman. It captures Liberty in left-profile relief as she walks toward the sun on the horizon with the American flag engulfing her figure. The inscriptions include Liberty, In God We Trust, and 1988.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1988-S Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin is the heraldic eagle of the United States. Modernized for this series in 1986 by John Mercanti, it depicts the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield on its chest. The bird clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons with a triangular cluster of 13 stars overhead. The inscriptions on this face read United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, 1 oz. Fine Silver One Dollar, and the S mint mark of the San Francisco Mint.
History
The United States Mint introduced the Proof American Eagle Silver Coins in 1986 to intense demand, with the first issue selling 1.446 million units. By 1988, demand had dropped to 557,370 coins, one-third that of the debut release.
