In 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Gold Maple Leaf Series, giving investors one of the first modern gold bullion coins to consider. By 1982, the series transitioned to 24-karat gold, setting a new standard. In 1989, the mint celebrated the 10th anniversary of the program with special Proof Gold Maple Leaf releases. Today, 1989 Proof Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coins are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1989 Proof Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coin listed here arrives in a protective plastic capsule only. The proof quality combines frosted design details with mirrored fields for visual contrast. This 1989 issue is the last year the series featured the second-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
Obverse
The obverse side of the 1989 Proof Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin carries Arnold Machins second-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Depicted in right-profile, the Queen appears as she did when Machin created this image in 1965. It became the first official effigy for the Gold Maple Leaf and appeared on coins from 1979 to 1989. The inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, 50 DOLLARS, and 1989.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1989 Proof Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coin, the sugar maple leaf remains the focal point. Designed in 1979 by Walter Ott, this realistic maple leaf design has been a staple of the entire Maple Leaf bullion program since its introduction. The inscriptions read CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1 OZ OR PUR.
History
The 1989 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf proof coins were released in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights. These were introduced to honor the 10th anniversary of the series and were offered as a full set with presentation options, as well as individually packaged pieces. Among these individual releases was the 1 oz Proof Gold Maple Leaf coin.
