The Royal Canadian Mint was founded in 1908 in Ottawa and is a Crown corporation. It produces all of Canadas circulation coins. In the 1980s, when it became necessary to boost production capacity, a second production facility was opened in Winnipeg.

Obverse

Gracing the obverse of the 1989 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin is a right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II, depicting Her Majesty at 39 years of age. Later versions of Her Majestys profile would depict her at 64 years and then 79 years of age. In the depiction of Her Majesty at 79 years of age, she is not wearing a crown. Since ascending to the throne in 1952, Queen Elizabeth II has graced the obverse of all Canadian coins. Inscriptions on the obverse are ELIZABETH II and 50 DOLLARS 1989.

Reverse

Adorning the reverse of the 1989 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin is a Maple Leaf, a symbol of pride and nationalism for Canadians. Master engraver Walter Ott beautifully captured the elegant details of the Maple Leaf in this timeless design, which has remained basically unchanged through the years. It is featured on all Canadian Maple Leaf coins. Inscriptions on the reverse are CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1 OZ OR PUR.

History

The first Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin was produced in a 99.9% pure gold, 1 oz denomination by the Royal Canadian Mint. In November 1982, the RCM made a significant change, increasing the gold purity of the Maple Leaf coins to 99.99%. This made the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin the first bullion coin to be minted at such high purity. In addition, like all other coin offerings, they began producing the Maple Leaf in additional weights. The 1989 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coins are available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights. Two additional weights were added in later years. The Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin is regarded as the standard by which 24-karat gold bullion coins are judged, due to the high purity of its gold. It is legal tender and has its face value stated in Canadian Dollars.
