Proof American Eagle Gold Coins have mint marks from the mint of origin. Since the 1986 introduction of the 1 oz coin, that weight in the Proof American Eagle Gold Series has been produced by the West Point Mint with a W mintmark. However, the fractional-ounce coins were initially struck by the Philadelphia Mint with a P mintmark from the 1987/88 introduction of the three weights until 1993. Since 1994, all three fractional-ounce coins have also been produced at the West Point Mint.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 1989-P Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins is a depiction of Lady Liberty. Here, Liberty is depicted in front-facing relief with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. This design originated on the $20 Gold Double Eagle in 1907 and was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

The reverse face of 1989 Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins comes with the design of American bald eagles at the nest. This exclusive design from Miley Busiek depicts a female and a hatchling in the nest as a male eagle flies overhead.

Proof American Eagle Gold Coin fractional-ounce options were first offered in 1987 when the 1/2 oz weight debuted. In 1988, the series was rounded out with the introduction of 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins.
