The American Eagle Gold Series debuted in 1986 with just 1 proof coin (1 oz.) The following year, a 1/2 oz proof coin was introduced to the series. In 1988, the proof series introduced 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz options as well. These proof coins have been released annually with the exception of 2009, due to economic uncertainty.
