Sales of the 1989 US Mint Proof Set demonstrated the continued strong interest in coin collecting through the 1980s. Sales of this Proof Set reached 3,009,107 sets, making this the eighth year of this decade to have annual sales exceed 3 million sets. It remained a 5 coin set, with a face value of $0.91. Nearly all coins in the set will have deep cameo finishes and are frequently encountered in high grades. This set was made by the US Mint in San Francisco. The 1989 Proof Set is packaged in the design created in 1983. Each of the 5 coins are placed into their respective slot on the textured purple cardboard holder, which is then sealed in a plastic case. This case is placed into a purple outer box, which has a flap to be used to slide the case in and out.

Designs

Each Proof Set includes one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar. On the obverse of each of these coins is featured a profile of the respective President. Each of them features its own unique reverse design.

Through the years, the composition of the coins has had to change, either due to fluctuating prices and/or availability of the precious metals used in their minting. The dime, quarter, and half dollar in the 1989 Proof Set are all copper-nickel clad, 8.33% nickel and 91.67% copper. The cent is copper-plated zinc, 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper. And the nickel is 25% nickel and 75% copper.

History

The packaging of the Proof Sets has changed as better materials have become available. Some changes were to provide a more aesthetically pleasing display. Some changes were to better protect the finish of the coins. An interesting change made in 1988 that continued for several years was a wording change on the cardboard holder. It switched from saying United States Proof Set to United States Mint Proof Set. Possibly confusing to a new collector.
